About TISD

Texline Independent School District serves the primary and secondary educational needs of approximately 600 square miles of the northern and western portions of Dallam County, Texas. It does so with one Pre-K through 12th grade public school campus located in Texline, Texas.

Dallam County, located in the far northwestern corner of the Texas Panhandle, borders New Mexico on the west and Oklahoma to the north. The county's diverse soil supports a variety of natural grasses and numerous crops, including wheat, corn, milo, sorghum, and other grain products. Farming and Ranching, the county's dominant industry, uses the abundant native grasses and crops to produce large numbers of beef cattle, hogs and horses.

Texline is at an elevation of 4693 ft. This provides us with mild winter weather and pleasant, cool summer months. A small but stable population, our residents come from a proud heritage. Small town living at it's best.

District History

Texline, a small quiet town founded in 1888, is located in the northwest corner of the Texas Panhandle along US Highway 87. It should come as no surprise that the town gets it's name from it's location on the Texas-New Mexico line. This area was once part of the historic XIT Ranch. It came to life in the 1880's as the XIT began selling property and the Fort Worth and Denver Railroad started pushing through the Panhandle. A division point for the railroad was chosen at what was to become Texline in 1887. Work was begun to build a roundhouse and support shops to service the locomotives. By the end of the year, a post office, depot and hotel were all built.

When Dallam County was organized in 1891 the only town in the county was Texline. Because of this many of the "firsts" of this area can be claimed. Texline had the first courthouse in Dallam County, the first school, the first marriage license issued and the first public road, running from Texline to the XIT's northern headquarters at Buffalo Springs. Originally, all schools within Dallam County were organized by and run through the County. The County Judge served as an acting Superintendent with the County Commissioners' Court serving as an ad hoc Board of Trustees. On October 3, 1891 the County Commissioners appropriated $240 out of the general fund for the purpose of "establishing and maintaining a public school at the town of Texline". The school was moved into the new courthouse upon its completion and held there until 1912 when a two story school building was constructed. By 1922 school enrollment was up to 248 and construction for a new school was begun. It was located where the tennis court now stands. This building was demolished in 1968. Classes began in the fall of 1966 in the present one story building and campus located at 302 E. Pine St.
